Why is IGBT preferred over MOSFET?
The main advantages of IGBT over a Power MOSFET and a BJT are: 1. It has a very low on-state voltage drop due to conductivity modulation and has superior on-state current density. So smaller chip size is possible and the cost can be reduced. Why do we use IGBT instead of MOSFET? IGBTs are better in power handling than MOSFETs. IGBTs operate at a higher voltage rating than MOSFETs. Since MOSFETs have a thin metal oxide layer to separate the gate terminal, they are susceptible to electrostatic discharges.
