The water in the surf zone is shallow, usually between 5 and 10 m (16 and 33 ft) deep; this causes the waves to be unstable. Do surfers surf in deep water? If you are beginning, you can learn to surf in the knee-waist deep water and stay right by the shore. For more advanced surfing, you might paddle up to 200 yards from shore.
